Easy Ways to Live Green

Going green is all the rage nowadays. More and more people are going green in an effort to help the environment. If you want to be more environmentally friendly but do not know where to start, do not worry. This article will show you easy ways you can help the environment by going green.

One easy way to go green is by changing your light bulbs to compact florescent bulbs (CFLs) or (LED) bulbs. Although these cost more initially than incandescent bulbs, you can save a lot over time in decreased energy costs.  CFL bulbs use 75 percent less energy and last ten times longer than regular incandescent bulbs. Since CFLs consume less energy, they pollute the environment less than regular bulbs.

Another way to reduce your carbon footprint is by purchasing energy-efficient appliances. These appliances have an Energy Star label, which means they meet the EPA’s energy efficient guidelines. Energy efficient appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, etc. can save you about a third on your energy bill without sacrificing style, features or comfort. They also reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Implementing measures to conserve water is something everyone can do. You can start by turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth. This preventive measure can save you up to eight gallons of water a day. Also, install low-flow plumbing fixtures to reduced the amount of water wasted. If you have any dripping shower or faucet, make sure to repair it.

One simple step to start being green is to turn off the lights when you leave a room. Also, set your printers, computers and monitors to the low-power setting such as hibernate and sleep. This can save you a lot of money and energy since even when these electronics are off, they consume “phantom power”.

Driving less is one way to conserve energy. When you drive less, you are reducing carbon emissions. You are also saving money on gas and wear and tear on your car. Some easy ways to drive less is carpooling, walking or riding a bike. Try taking public transportation if you live in an area where it is easily accessible.

Recycling is a popular way to go green. Most local governments offer recycling programs for items such as paper, glass and plastic. You can also recycle items such as printer cartridges, electronics and paints by taking them to specific recycling sites in your town. There are also companies that will recycle your old items when you buy their new ones. You can also recycle the water you use in your home. Place a small bucket in the shower to catch the water and use this to water your plant.

As you can see, there are many things you can do to go green. Being more environmentally friendly not only helps the environment but can help you save money. These simple steps can help reduce your carbon footprint as well as reduce waste. Implement them and you will be on your way to living green.
